At SSIMS&RC the Department of Ophthalmology is noted for its efficiency, attending to a large number of patients. Thanks to a young & energetic team of doctors. It is well equipped with 3 consultation rooms accommodating slit lamp bio-microscopes attached with applanation tonometer and digital camera. The department is also equipped with indirect ophthalmoscope , Goldman and Zeiss indentation Goniolenses, Automated Humphrey’s Visual field analyser, Synoptophore, etc.
The Out Patient services include speciality clinics i.e., retina , glaucoma, squint & orthoptics, neuro-opthalmology, occuloplasty and low vision aid clinic. Added to it are a seminar hall and library with a sitting capacity of 40 students and an Eye Bank facility. Ophthalmic operation theatre is equipped with Carl-Zeiss operating microscope . Alcon’s Infinity Phacoemulsification unit and Reticare automated vitrectomy machine for posterior segment surgeries.
The department conducts regular eye camps, celebrates world glaucoma day, conducts Eye Donation camps and talks. Premature neonates are being screened for Retinopathy of Prematurity with Retcam and those requiring treatments are also managed with Indirect laser photocoagulation. This is in collaboration with the Karnataka Internet assisted Diagnosis of Retinopathy of Prematurity (KIDROP Project). The department has 4 Post-graduate (M.S Ophthalmology) candidates being admitted from the academic year (2012-2013). The department is seeking to add the latest technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography, Specular microscopy, Corneal topography, etc.
