26th Karnataka State ENT Surgeons conference (AOI- KSCON 2008) was held on 29th, 30th & 31st August at SSIMS&RC; under the leadership of Dr. S M Siddalingappa, Dr. AM Shivakmar & Dr. KP Basavaraju. SSIMS&RC;, JJMMC & Davanagere ENT Surgeons Association jointly hosted this mega event after 15years.
Dr. D S Grewal a renowned ENT Surgeon & former president of AOI inaugurated the conference. Dr. Shamnur Shivashankarappa presided the function. Dr. Kanteerava Balasaraswati, Dean SSIMS&RC; inaugurated the Trade & Fair exhibition. Dr. H R Chandrashekar, Principal, JJMMC inaugurated State AOI website. Dr. P Nagaraj, Principal, SSIM&RC; released the Souvenir. Dr H R Gurupadappa, Dr M G Rajashekarappa, AC Jayanna, Dr. Jyothi Swaroop, Dr. Hariharamurthy were present during the inaugural ceremony.
Dr. SM Siddalingappa welcomed the gathering & guests. Dr. A M Shivakumar delivered the vote of thanks. Senior ENT Surgeons of Davanagere were felicitated during the function.
Conference involved live surgical workshops on the first day followed by oration, lectures, panel discussion, and paper presentations by teaching faculty, PG’s, private practitioners & P G quiz.
Dr M Shaker inaugurated live surgical workshop on day one, Dr. Ashish Bhumker a young & dynamic surgeon from Thane performed intact canal wall Mastoidetomy with Tympanoplasty. Dr. Meghanadh from Hyderabad demonstrated FESS surgery and Dr. George Vergheese performed Augmentation Rhinoplasty on day one.
Second day included olio lactic orations from guest faculty Dr. Ashish Bhumker, Dr. Meghanath, Dr. George Verghese, and Dr. Nanjundappa. Dr. Venkatesh M D from Pune highlighted about case selection for cochlear implants, Dr. B M Balaraj, Prof Forensic medicine enlighted about Medico legal aspects in ENT. Dr. HC Ramesh gave bird view about implementation of national program for Prevention & Control of deafness.
Post Graduates presented their research work papers selected for the gold medal award. Other award-winning event was Innovations in ENT. Day 2 concluded with general body meeting. Dr. K P Basavaraju moderated a panel discussion on Allergic Rhinitis panelists included Professors from various medical colleges.
Award winning events like Teaching Faculty Paper, Private Practitioner Paper & Video Session were conducted on day 3. Dr. Jyoti Swarup conducted panel discussion on Head & Neck Trauma. Last event on day 3 was Post Graduate Quiz conducted by Dr. Dattatreya. Post Graduates from BMC bagged the Ekalavya award sponsored by Dr. A M Shivakumar, PGs from JJMMC stud second. 29 teams from various parts of the state were participated in the quiz.
Needless to mention the hospitality, which included savvy tasters of Davanagere through out the conference, stunning dance performance by Yana Lewis Group, Bangalore, The nonstop laughing bouts by Richard Louis will be there in sweet memories of the delegates who came in large numbers from all the parts of the state to make this event a grand success.
More than 400 delegates registering for any state ENT annual conference, more than 350 new state ENT association memberships, delegates participating from neighboring states like Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and also from other countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia made this conference a unique of its kind.
A state level CME with interactive tutorials for Post graduates was conducted on Radiology Temporal bone, Nose and Paranasal sinuses by department of Otorhinolaryngology on 21st January 2012. 60 post graduate delegates and 25 faculty members from various medical colleges across state had participated in the CME. Dr. Prakash MD from Bangalore Medical College delivered a lecture on Anatomy of the Paranasal sinuses. Dr. Rahul Modi, from Lokamanya Tilak Medical College and General Hospital, Sion, Mumbai, Delivered a lecture on Radiology of Nose and Paranasal sinuses. Indications of CT Paranasal sinuses, How to read a CT scan CT anatomy of the nose and Paranasal sinuses were highlighted in the lecture session. Dr. Kishan Ashok Bhagawat addressed about the radiologists perspective.
These lecture sessions were followed by Interactive tutorials which were moderated by Guest faculty. Post graduates were divided into 12 groups and C T films were given to each group. Group Discussions were moderated by Guest faculty In the interactive sessions groups were asked to prepare a report and read in front of the audience. Guest faculty members encouraged them to read and corrected the mistakes and highlighted some of the important surgical landmarks to be identified by a surgeon before doing a functiona Endoscopic sinus surgery.
Similar lecture sessions on Temporal bone were conducted on temporal bone by Dr. Jyothi Swaroop from Siddartha Medical College, Tumkur, Dr. Kshitij Shah, from Lokamanya Tilak Medical College & General Hospital, Sion, Mumbai, and Dr. Kishan Bhagawath, Consultant Radiologist from SSIMS & RC.

A state level CME with interactive tutorials for ENT and Radiology Post graduates was conducted on Neck Imaging by department of Otorhinolaryngology and Radiology on 20th April 2013. 75 post graduate delegates and 43 faculty members from various medical colleges across state had participated in the CME. Dr. Jitender Saini MD( Rad), DM( NIIR) , Assistant Professor from NIMHANS, Bangalore delivered a lecture on Basics of sectional imaging and Normal Sectional Anatomy from Skull base to Mediastinum. This lecture was followed by felicitation to Dr. Tippanna K senior ENT surgeon from Davangere. Dr. Akhil M Kulkarni MD( Rad ), PDCC from SSIMS & RC Davangere and Dr. Sharath Kumar GG MD( Rad), DM( NIIR) from Apollo speciality Clinic Bangalore hosted the anatomy interactive session for post graduates. Dr. Akhil M. Kulkarni delivered a lecture on High resolution Ultrasonography of Thyroid. Indications for thyroid ultrasonography, differences between benign and malignant lesions, characterization of malignancy by various parameters were highlighted Dr. Deepak K.S. MD( Rad), DNB( Rad ),PDCC from MHD, Shimoga addressed about approaches for the Neck lesion.
Dr. Sharath Kumar GG delivered a lecture on Endovascular intervention in Head and Neck pathologies. Indications for endovascular lesions, material used, risks involved were highlighted in the lecture.

First state level ENT undergraduate quiz was conducted by Department of ENT, SSIMS&RC, Department of ENT, JJMMC under auspices of Davangere ENT surgeons association on 14th September 2013 at Auditorium SSIMS & RC. 40 teams( two members) from 24 colleges across the state had participated in the Quiz. A Maximum of two teams per college could represent for the state level quiz. Selected candidates representing various colleges were selected by MCQ/IA test at their college level.
Two preliminary rounds of written test were conducted. Out of 40 teams 6 teams made entry into the final round. Dr. Jyothi Swaroop, Professor, Department of ENT, Siddartha Medical College, Tumkur was the quiz master.
Dr. Manjunath Alur, Principal, JJM Medical College, Dr. Shankar M Senior ENT Surgeon, inaugurated the Quiz programme by lighting the lamp. Dr. NK Kalappanavar, Medical Director, SSIMS & RC, Dr. AM Shivakumar, Vice Principal and HOD Department of ENT,Dr. Arun Ajjappa, Vice Principal, HOD Department of Anasesthesiology, Dr. Basavaraju KP, Professor, department of ENT other faculty members from the department of ENT, JJMMC and SSIMS & RC took part in the inauguration programme.Dr. Manjunath Alur in his presidential address wished all the teams.
After 7 rounds of audio visual questions, Winners and Runners up were chosen. Mr. Bhushan C Shetty and Anish Bhat P. from KMC, Mangalore won the quiz competition and cash prize of Rs. 10,000/- with trophy, Mr. Arun S and Nikitha B. Vadvadgi from Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya were runners up and won a cash prize of Rs. 5,000/- with trophy. Team Ms. Chaitra K.R. & Ms. Nalini and Team Ms. Navya N.P. & Ms. Neha Manjani representing SSInstitute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre stood III and V position respectively. Team Ms. Pradyumn Shenoy, Mr. Vijaykumar from KMC Mangalore stood IV, Team Mr. Rakesh and Mr. Sham S Taurej from Vims Bellary stood VI in the quiz competition.

Department of ENT, SSIMS RC, JJM Medical College and AOI Davangere Chapter in association with Department of Anatomy SSIMS RC, successfully conducted CME “ESSence of ENT” “Cadaveric Endoscopic Sinus Surgery demonstration and remembering ENT with Hand model” on 23 rd December 2017. Around 125 delegates across the state participated in the event.
CME was dedicated to Late Dr. M. Shankar, former Head of the Department of ENT JJMMC.
Dr. Deepak Haldipur, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Chord Road, Hospital, Bangalore, National President, AOI Demonstrated Cadaveric Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. After briefing audience regarding the tips and pearls about the FESS, Dr. Deepak Haldipur demonstrated Basic steps of the FESS on the cadaver both with conventional and Microdebrider assisted dissection. He also demonstrated Extended uses for ESS in Skull base procedures.
Dr. D. Vijay Govindarajan, Honorary faculty, GMC , Vellore did practical demonstration of Hand Model for remembering Middle ear, temporal bone Pharynx, Larynx, Straw model of Facial nerve, Mobile otoscopic Picture and made ENT Easy, session concluded with ENT ertainment.

An awareness program was jointly organized on 19th April 2017 by Department of ENT, S.S.I.M.S. & RC, JJM Medical College in association with Davangere ENT surgeons’s Association and Amplifon India (Pvt) limited. This Program was was held in two phases with different audiences, Morning sessions were focused on the scientific discussions about hearing assessment, early identification, evaluation , cochlear implant candidacy and Surgery of cochlear implant for ENT, OBG and Pediatric fraternity including undergraduate students. Afternoon session was focused on selected parents of profound deaf children.
Morning session included series of lectures by Dr. Latha S( Pediatrics on Evaluation of Deaf Children Pediatricians Role ) Dr. Venkatesha BK ( ENT on Evaluation of Deaf Children- ENT surgeons perspective), Mr. Ismail (Clinical Audiologist, Amplifon India Pvt Ltd on Audiological Evaluation of Deaf Children), Dr. Joish Upendra Kumar ( Assistant Prof. Dept of Radiology JJM Medical College, on Radiological Evaluation of Deaf Children ), Dr. Nanda H.N ( District Family Welfare Officer, Co-ordinator, NPPCD, Davangere District on D). Afternoon session included short lectures by Dr. Dathathri HA, Cochlear implant Surgeon, Sri Suresh, Davangere Branch Manager, Association for people with disability, Sri. Shashidhar, District Disability welfare Officer, Davangere, Dr. Manjunath, Dr. Mamatha BS, Dr. Triveni, Govt ENT Specialists, Dr. Asha , Clinical psychologist. This program was followed by parent interactions with Faculties.
Department of ENT, , JJM Medical College, SSIMS & RC in association with AOI Davangere Chapter successfully conducted CME “Instructional course in Rhinoplasty surgery and live surgical workshop on Rhinoplasty” on 30th November 2019. Around 80 delegates including faculties from Dental fraternity also participated in the event.
Dr. Vishwas Vijaydev, Consultant ENT and Facial plastic Surgeon, Smile N Face centre, Trustwell hospital and visiting consultant at many prominent centres in Bangalore, also awardee of “Young ENT surgeon of Karnataka 2019”, and founder member of National Facial plastic surgeons association India, demonstrated Live Rhinoplasty surgery. After briefing audience regarding the tips and pearls about the facial plastic surgery, Dr. Vishwas Vijaydev demonstrated basic suturing techniques and facial flaps to the audience.

CME – Workshop on ‘Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and Video electronystagmography – Hands on Training’ was jointly organised by Department of Otorhinolaryngology, JJM Medical college, SS Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, and AOI – Davangere Chapter on 23rd March, 2019 at the Library Auditorium of Bapuji Hospital Davangere with the blessings of Sri Shamanur Shivashankarappa and Sri SS Mallikarjun.
Chief Guest, Dr. BS Prasad, Principal, SSIMS & RC, inaugurated the CME-Workshop and highlighted the importance of CME and need for inter departmental co ordination in evaluation and management of dizzy patient. The CME was graced by eminent speaker Dr. Srinivas DR, co-founder of Cyclops MedTech Pvt. Ltd. and winner of the Aditya Zha entrepreneur India award 2017, who has special interest in vertigo and balance disorders with expertise in videonystagmography. He gave valuable insights about the concepts of vertigo and migraine, and conducted hands on training sessions to pave way in understanding the strategies of diagnosing and managing patients with vertigo. He also demonstrated the application of videonystagmography in aiding the diagnosis of vertigo, and summed it up with an interactive open discussion to simplify the complexities of evaluation and management of BBPV and VENG.
The CME was attended by over 60 delegates from various cities.

Dr Gaurav S Medikeri, an alumnus of JJMMC ENT department, is currently woking as course director in HCG cancer centre, Bengaluru and also consultant at Medikeri ENT institute, Bengaluru. He has completed various fellowship courses in different sub-specialties in ENT like rhinoplasty, Anterior Skull base surgery from reputed institutes in the world.
Total of 4 cases were operated by Dr. Gaurav and he was assisted by Dr. Nagaraj Maradi and Dr. Ajith K.M in the surgeries. Anaesthesia team under the guidance of Dr Arunkumar A and Dr Shivakumar K.P, consisted of Dr Sagar S.M, Dr Mamatha, Dr Soudamini , helped in smooth conduct of the live surgical demonstration . Following cases were operated for demonstration using coblation - Adenotonsillectomy, Medial maxillectomy, Functional endoscopic sinus surgery and turbinate reduction. Followed by academic session by Dr. Gaurav about the use of Coblation in ENT.
Department of ENT, JJMMC in association with Department of ENT, SSIMS & RC and AOIK Davangere conducted CME “Live surgical workshop on Endoscopic ear surgery” on 20th July 2024. Over 100 delegates from all across the state participated in the CME.
Dr. Deviprasad D and Dr. Marina Saldanha, alumni of ENT department of JJMMC, Davanagere were the invited resource persons. Dr. Deviprasad D, is currently heading the department of ENT at Kasturba Medical College,Mangaluru. Dr Marina is Associate professor in KS Hegde Medical academy, Mangaluru.
Dr. Marina delivered lecture on Endoscopic Anatomy of Ear. This was followed by a series of live endoscopic surgeries by Dr. Deviprasad D. He performed Endoscopic Tympanoplasty, Endoscopic Stapedotomy and Endoscopic Myringotomy with Grommet insertion to the audience.
